Old BusinessNone New BusinessFrater Brian Elledge opened discussion on providing financial assistance to fraters who are having problems paying their chapter dues. A frater said that he was having difficulty in coming up with dues, and wanted to know if the alumni chapter could assist him with a loan. Currently chapter dues are about $400/semester, and there is talk that it could go to $450/semester. Of that amount about $225/semester goes to national, and must be paid by a certain date or the chapter will incur late payment penalty fees. Eventually the frater has said that he has come up with the money, and will not need the loan. We discussed criteria such as who would be eligible, repayment programs, and steps that should be taken to prevent recurrence for loan requests. Since the frater did not need the loan, the issue of making loans was sent to the Board of Advisors for action. Since they would be directly familiar with the frater and the issues, it was decided that the chapter Board of Advisors should establish the process for providing financial assistance. Discussion was tabled pending Board of Advisors recommendations. The discussion broadened as the chapter has made a similar request for financial assistance. The chapter is requesting that the alumni chapter lend sums to assist 4 or 5 fraters in paying their dues to national. One suggestion given is that the chapter set up a payment plan, where fraters can pay their dues in installments, rather than having to come up with the money at the due date. It was voted and agreed that the alumni chapter send sums to the active chapter, that will be used to pays the dues of the 4 or 5 fraters to national. In return the chapter will provide the alumni chapter with a 2-year budget plan, a payback plan, and a plan on how to prevent needing the alumni chapter to provide continual financial assistance. Frater Rick Steiner went into the hospital He was slurring speech, having blurry vision, etc, on Sunday so ambulance took him to Barnes. He was unable to speak at all now, some incontinence. MRI shows inflammation in brain.
The last update was that Rick is doing better. Can walk to bathroom with help. Talking pretty well. They are giving him 2antibiotics, not sure what diagnosis of infection is. Frater Rick has been receiving chemotherapy treatments for a CNS lymphoma condition. Prayers for Frater Rick, his family, and the doctors and nurses as they fight to get him better.
